Lots of people in America want to get liposuction. The procedure is one of the all-time most popular surgeries in the history of cosmetic surgery. Of course, it’s no great secret that liposuction costs money.

Even the cheapest procedures have a price tag of over a thousand dollars. Depending on the amount of fat a patient wants to remove, the number of areas that the patient wants treated and how tough and dense the patient’s fat is, prices can reach very high levels.

When one considers the cost of liposuction, the current economic crunch and the high demand for the surgery, it is perhaps not surprising that a number of people are looking for cheaper options.

The past decade has seen an increase in “cosmetic surgery tourism.” A number of companies offer vacation packages that include various cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction. Because cosmetic surgery prices are much cheaper in certain areas of the world, these companies can offer travel, a vacation and a surgery for a price that is lower than the cost of a simple surgery in the United States.

Sound great? Unfortunately, there are a number of downsides to cosmetic surgery tourism. Although there are highly skilled and reliable cosmetic surgeons in countries all over the world, it can be hard to know whether you’ve found one of these or not.

Medical laws and requirements vary from country to country. In some countries, it is too easy to gain certification, and sometimes dangerous procedures are performed when they shouldn’t be. Sometimes substandard equipment or operating facilities are used in other countries, which could hurt your results and your health.

Additionally, you may not enjoy your vacation as much as you might think. Cosmetic surgery requires rest and relaxation so that the body can heal. Many of the fun vacation activities offered by these companies shouldn’t be done by recovering patients. Sunbathing, snorkeling, waterskiing or jet skiing, extended sightseeing tours, swimming, and drinking alcohol are just some of the vacation activities you might want to do, but shouldn’t after your surgery.

Also, your vacation and traveling could represent a danger to your health. When going abroad, you are exposed to a number of different sorts of germs, which could increase your risk of infection. Additionally, flying too close to the time of your surgery can sometimes increase one’s danger of serious blood clots and other complications.

Finally, you won’t be able to get the detailed follow up care that you should after your surgery. It is important that you be able to get the post-surgical care that you need, and a short vacation to another country is typically not sufficient time to ensure your continued health and beauty.

Although it may sound tempting, it is best to be very cautious when considering going oversees for a liposuction. You may be better off staying inside the country and spending slightly more than going with the possibly dangerous route of cosmetic surgery tourism.
