Liposuction has become a bit of a buzz word today. It seems like everywhere one turns there’s a news story about some celebrity’s recent procedure, or there’s an ad talking about how liposuction can help you shed excess pounds quickly and easily, or there’s some internet scare story about lipoplasties gone horribly wrong.

With all of the hype, it’s good to be able to get at what the actual truth is. This article will discuss what liposuction is, what some of its benefits are, and what it can’t do.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure which removes excess fat from specific body areas through suction. It does this using special hollow needles called cannulas. A surgeon inserts a cannula into the target body area and moves it back and forth through the fatty tissue. As he or she does this, the cannula breaks up and suctions out excess and unwanted fat.

The primary benefit to liposuction is an improved appearance. Especially as they age, people tend to acquire pockets of fat that are difficult to remove, even through diet and exercise. These pockets sometimes form in disproportionate ways. Thus, sometimes a person who is overall fairly healthy can have bulges of fat around their stomachs, thighs, or somewhere else in the body.

Liposuction can remove these pockets of fat to create a more pleasing and more streamlined appearance. Some patients find that this helps them to find clothes that fit better, and some find that they enjoy activities like swimming more because they experience less social awkwardness about their appearance. Some patients find that they have an easier time keeping a healthy self-image and self-esteem. However, ultimately, liposuction should not be relied upon to give someone a feeling of self-worth.

Although liposuction can help remove certain pockets of fat, and although weight loss leads to a number of health benefits, lipoplasty typically does not remove enough fat to improve one’s overall health. The more fat a surgery removes, the more traumatic is, and thus liposuction is best suited for removing relatively small amounts of fat. Occasionally, a lipoplasty can help benefit someone’s health if it motivates them to improve their diet and exercise patterns. However, it’s always a better idea to make the change before one’s surgery.

One of the few instances where liposuction can actually offer substantial improvements in one’s health is in the case of breast reductions. Sometimes, women with extremely large breasts experience serious aches and pains in their back, neck and shoulders because of the weight. Liposuction of the breast can remove up to 50% of this weight, which can help one to feel better. In some instances, insurance will even help to fund such surgeries.
